noun
[MAL-ah-prop-iz'-ahm] Play Word

1. ridiculous misuse of a word, usually by confusion with one that sounds similar: "Jim didn't catch his own malapropism, and his audience enjoyed a hearty chuckle at his expense."

2. an instance of such misuse, as in 'I like the song, it's just playing a truffle loud.'

Origin:

In Action:
"Early this month, a dispirited Butch Goring stood before a roomful of reporters after yet another dreadful performance by the Islanders. So distraught was Goring by the team's inexplicable lack of effort and energy that he referred to them as a Heckyl and Jeckyl club.

He meant, of course, Jekyll and Hyde, but his malapropism probably contained more truth than anyone realized. The Islanders, who started the season full of promise and at one point actually held a share of first place in the National Hockey League's Atlantic Division, have morphed into a poorly drawn cartoon that is not very funny."

Jenny Kellner. New York Times, Islanders Wounded and Reeling, but Not Quitting (December 26, 2000).
