Brit. /{sm}{rfa}sl{schwa}/, U.S. /{sm}{fata}sl{schwa}r/  [< the name of William Osler (1849-1919), Canadian physician.
  Polycythaemia rubra vera (sense Osler's disease n. (a) at sense 1) was described by Osler in 1904 (Amer. Jrnl. Med. Sci. 128 187); hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (sense Osler's disease n. (b) at sense 1) in 1896 (see OSLER-WEBER-RENDU n.); and the subcutaneous nodules of subacute bacterial endocarditis (sense 2) in 1909 (Q. Jrnl. Med. 2 219).

    1. Osler's disease n. (a) polycythaemia rubra vera (see POLYCYTHAEMIA n.) (rare); (b) hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (cf. OSLER-RENDU-WEBER n., OSLER-WEBER-RENDU n.).

1908 Q. Jrnl. Med. 2 105 Erythraemia... Vaquez's disease, Osler's disease. 1921 Proc. Royal Soc. B. 92 xxii, An hereditary malady, characterised by multiple telangiectases associated with hæmorrhages, may rightly be styled Osler's disease. 1930 Internat. Clinics 3 170 It is possible that some of the cases of essential hematuria..may have been instances of Osler's disease [‘Telangiectasia (hereditary) with hemorrhages’]. 1970 Acta Chirurgica Scandinavica 136 213 (title) Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (Osler's disease) as the cause of gastro-intestinal haemorrhage. 1988 Rhinology 26 19 Ten patients with Osler's disease were treated for severe epistaxis. 1997 Jrnl. Laryngol. & Otol. 111 1038 Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome, Osler's disease) is an inherited abnormality of the vasculature characterized by abnormal subepithelial vessels.

    2. Osler's node n. (also Osler node) a small, tender, subcutaneous nodule, usually in a pad of a finger or toe, seen in subacute bacterial endocarditis.

1920 Brit. Med. Jrnl. 28 Aug. 305/1 In the subacute type the presence of the tender cutaneous nodule (Osler node) is of great value. 1971 Ann. Internal Med. 85 296 Histologic examination of an Osler's node from one of the patients with S. aureus endocarditis showed a microabscess in the papillary dermis together with microemboli in nearby dermal arterioles. 1988 Brit. Med. Jrnl. 21 May 1444/1 Three days later he developed an Osler's node on the left thumb. 2001 Clin. Infectious Dis. 32 (title) 63 Diagnosis: a Janeway lesion and an Osler's node.
