(noun)
[pahr-SOO-ahns] Play Word

1. the act or process of carrying out or putting into effect; prosecution: "We launched several new products in pursuance of the company's objective to lead the ergonomic pencil holder market."

Origin:
Approximately 1596; probably borrowed from Middle French, 'poursuiance': act of pursuing; from Old French, 'poursuir': to pursue; from Vulgar Latin, 'prosequere'; from Latin, 'prosequi': follow after ('pro-': forward + 'sequi': follow).

In action:
"Hon. Akuffo maintained that people fear that they can contract HIV through a normal social contact with an infected person. She added, as a result, people with HIV have been thrown out of their families, sacked from employment and denied events. She pointed out that stories abound of individuals being rejected usually out of fear, confusion, shame and agony, adding that they had to endure their stigma rejection and isolation in addition to the agony of facing a life threatening condition.

Hon. Akuffo cautioned that these feelings and attitudes need to be understood and changed. She said in pursuance of the national agenda in the fight against HIV/AIDS, the Ministry of Justice has initiated a number of programmes, adding that the ministry is on record as the only one to have organised an AIDS awareness march last year, which involved a cross section of stakeholders and in particular the youth."

Alice A. Boateng. "Deputy AG Joins Campaign Against HIV/Aids," The Accra Independent (April 11, 2003).

"Touching as it was to see him given pride of place next to Bill Clinton at a dinner on Tuesday night, I am obliged to deliver a pre-emptive caution to my friend Lord Levy ... It seems his lordship has developed a new habit, and has taken to kissing strange men in pursuance of world peace. In the old days, Lord L hugged people in a manly, bearish way. However, on a recent visit to Cairo, a change in policy was noted when he made as though to hug President Hosni Mubarak's son Gamal but then planted a peck on his cheek. Mubarak Junior - Dubya Mubarak as he's known by the Nile - was said to be perplexed and even displeased at this intimacy, although how far the incident has set back the cause of Middle Eastern peace remains hard to quantify. Be that as it may, we would like to issue a formal public warning to Lord Levy that in the ever more unlikely event of the fireworks luncheon taking place, we will not brook overfamiliarity of this kind, and will confine ourselves to a brisk handshake."

Matthew Norman. "Diary," The UK Guardian (October 3, 2002).

"So-called Western Civilization, as practised in half of Europe, some of Asia and a few parts of North America, is better than anything else available. Western civilization not only provides a bit of life, a pinch of liberty and the occasional pursuance of happiness, it's also the only thing that's ever tried to. Our civilization is the first in history to show even the slightest concern for average, undistinguished, none-too-commendable people like us."

P.J. (Patrick Jake) O'Rourke (b. 1947). U.S. journalist. "Introduction," Holidays in Hell (1988).
