({sm}ske{shti}t{schwa}{vdftheta}{rfa}n)  Also skate-a-thon, skate-athon. [f. SKATE v. + -ATHON.] 

    A prolonged period of skating, organized in order to raise money for a charity or cause.

1970 Toronto Daily Star 24 Sept. 17/5 Teams of minor hockey players and figure skaters will take part in a day-long skatathon at Doublerink Arena, Highway 7. 1973 Kingston (Ontario) Whig-Standard 20 Feb. 9/7 A total of 292 skaters from 39 teams completed 100 laps in a skate-a-thon for the Picton District Minor Hockey League Saturday. 1980 Washington Post 15 Feb. (Weekend section) 3/1 Skaters, ice or roller, can test their endurance for a good cause this Monday, because rinks all around Washington are sponsoring Skate-a-Thons. 1986 Auckland Metro Feb. 64/2 We..had a card from pupils at Remuera Intermediate who held a skate-athon to raise money for us.
